The president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, Gerardo Landaluce, hopes that the rapprochement between Spain and Morocco will facilitate the resumption of maritime passenger traffic with Tangier Med, suspended for two years.

For Landaluce, the statement by the Spanish government in which it announces the start of a new stage in bilateral relations with Morocco, both diplomatically and economically, is good news for the port, which will finally be able to resume maritime passenger traffic with Tangier Med. “We hope that these declarations can materialize quickly because maritime passenger traffic has been at a standstill for two years. We hope it will return to normal as soon as possible,” he said.

Morocco has suspended maritime passenger traffic with Spain since 2020 to limit the spread of Covid-19. In the last two years, Operation Marhaba dedicated to MREs has not been organized, leading shipping companies and companies that provide services in the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa to bankruptcy. The last edition of Operation Transit, which took place in 2019, enabled more than three million Moroccans residing in Europe to reach Morocco via Spanish ports in order to spend their summer holidays there.
