Tunisia: Gunfire Against a Barracks in Kairouan

Shots were fired at dawn on Sunday at the headquarters of a National Guard security brigade in Kairouan (central Tunisia), by an unknown car that fled.

This is what emerges from a concise statement published by the General Syndicate of the National Guard in Kairouan, Sunday, on its Facebook page.

The union said the attack did no damage.

In a related context, local radio “Sabra FM”, reported that the National Guard barracks in Kairouan was targeted by gunfire at the main entrance. The assailants then fled.

The same source believes that “the perpetrators of this crime belong to one of the terrorist cells”.

For its part, the official page of the central unit of the Central Intervention Regiment of Kairouan (affiliated to the National Guard) on Facebook published photos showing the traces of bullets on the door of the barracks.

The Interior Ministry did not immediately comment on the incident.

It should be recalled that the Ministry of the Interior launched, on Saturday, an appeal for witnesses to urgently report a person in the name of Ahmed Ben Mahmoud Ben Ahmed Bettaieb “in the prevention of terrorist acts”, and subject to a wanted poster.

In a press release, the Department of the Interior calls on citizens to alert, quickly and urgently, the security authorities, in case they identify this individual or have information on his whereabouts or his movements.

Since May 2011, Tunisia has been, at intervals, the scene of several terrorist attacks which intensified in 2013, causing dozens of victims, mainly belonging to the security and military corps and foreign tourists.

The attacks were concentrated in the heights and the mountainous regions of the west, where the terrorist groups are entrenched.
