Morocco wants its adhesion to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be “progressive and gradual,” the Secretary of State in Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Mounia Boucetta said.Answering a question on measures taken by the government to implement Morocco’s accession to ECOWAS, Ms. Boucetta pointed out that three phases of political, legal and technical nature were chosen to make this decision a reality.

Thus, the political phase was successfully completed after the agreement in principle of the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS member countries for the accession of Morocco to their sub-regional grouping, while the legal phase concerns the completion of measures of effective membership.

Referring to the technical phase, the Secretary of State explained that it focuses on launching sectoral negotiations between Morocco and the Organization in a gradual and realistic approach that takes into account the specificities and interests of both parties in the context a win-win vision.

She also discussed the development of a series of sector studies to be used in the negotiations that will be initiated during the technical phase.

Ms. Boucetta also affirmed that Morocco’s willingness to integrate this space is a strategic decision with a strong political and economic dimension, as it intervenes to reinforce the strong and deep links uniting Morocco and the member countries, within the framework of a vision advocating regional integration as a vector of economic acceleration in Africa.
