The UN General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution that “demands that Russia immediately ceases the use of force against Ukraine”, in a vote approved by 141 countries. Morocco has decided to abstain. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs justifies this “sovereign” decision of the kingdom.

Morocco’s non-participation does not change its position regarding the situation between Russia and Ukraine, as reaffirmed in the press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, dated February 26, 2022, the ministry said in a statement.

Indeed, Morocco says it continues to “follow with concern and concern the evolution of the situation between Ukraine and Russia”, reaffirming its “ attachment to respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty and national unity. of all member states of the United Nations ”.

In addition, the press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the financial contribution made by the kingdom, in response to the appeal of the United Nations Secretary, reaffirming his regret for “the military escalation which has unfortunately made this day, hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, and which has caused human suffering on both sides, especially since this situation affects all the populations and States of the region and beyond”.

Moroccan diplomacy then recalled that “the members of the Organization must settle their differences by peaceful means and according to the principles of international law, in order to preserve world peace and security”.

As a reminder, the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly was adopted yesterday, following the approval of 141 States, while 35 countries did not participate in the vote, and 5 others opposed it, in particular Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Eritrea.
