The UN held an emergency special session on developments in Ukraine, six days after the start of the Russian military operation in that country.

Algeria abstained during the vote while reaffirming its attachment to the Charter of the United Nations and calling for “the easing of tensions” as well as “prioritizing” dialogue.

During this session, the Algerian Ambassador to the UN explained this position.

“At a time when my country is following the serious and exacerbated evolution of events in Ukraine, my delegation strongly reaffirms Algeria’s attachment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter,” he said.

For the Algerian Ambassador to the UN, the principles and aims of this Charter “must remain the basis of international law and the cornerstone of international relations, in particular those linked to respect for the independence and sovereignty of States, as well as territorial integrity in accordance with international legality and the right of peoples to self-determination”.

“Virtues of dialogue”

The Algerian representative recalled Algeria’s positions of principle concerning the “preservation and consolidation of the multilateral system and in accordance with its commitment to developing friendly relations between States, based on peaceful coexistence, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and mutual respect for international commitments and security guarantees”.

In this context, Algeria “can only join in all diplomatic efforts and appeals aimed at easing current tensions, and at favoring the virtues of dialogue in order to promote living together in peace between countries in the interest of international peace and security. »

After recognizing the separatist republics of Donbass (eastern Ukraine), Russia launched a military operation against this country on Thursday, February 24 after having unsuccessfully demanded guarantees from the West on Ukraine’s non-membership of NATO.
