Morocco Algeria: A Spanish website has revealed that Moroccan authorities have reinforced their security and military units along the Algerian border.

The Larazon website attributed the Moroccan action to prevent the alleged infiltration of African migrants across the Algerian border.

The Moroccan Embassy in Spain issued a statement accusing Algeria of having orchestrated the storming of the borders of the city of Melilla.

The embassy said the attempt to cross the border fence at Melilla was planned by assailants experienced in conflict zones who entered Moroccan territory from Algeria due to what it described as the deliberate inaction by the Algerian authorities.

Algeria responded to the Moroccan accusations, through the special envoy for Western Sahara and the Maghreb, Amar Belani, who said: “Morocco does not have enough courage to bear the shame, which is what drives him to look for a scapegoat to escape responsibility.

Belani denied the Moroccan accusations related to the laxity of the Algerian authorities on the borders, stressing that the Algerian borders are fully secured in order to thwart the attempts to smuggle drugs from Morocco, which is carrying out real aggression against Algeria.

Algeria, Spain, the African Union, and the United Nations have called for the opening of an independent investigation to reveal the circumstances of the murder of more than 20 African migrants by the Moroccan gendarmerie on the walls of Melilla.

Spanish justice has also opened an investigation into the circumstances of the case.

Spain’s opposition has accused Spain’s prime minister of making a deal with Morocco to prevent migrants from reaching Melilla at all costs in exchange for his support for the Western Sahara autonomy proposal.
