Morocco: Chinese Gotion High Tech Will Invest $6.3 Billion in a Mega-Factory of Electric Batteries

The plant, which should have a production capacity of 100 gigawatt hours per year, could consolidate Morocco’s position as an important player in the automotive industry.  

The Chinese group Chinese Gotion High Tech signed, Wednesday, May 31, a memorandum of understanding with the Moroccan authorities relating to the establishment of a mega-factory of batteries for electric vehicles in the kingdom, for an investment estimated at 6 .3 billion.

According to a press release published by the Moroccan Agency for the Development of Investments and Exports (AMDIE), this plant should have a production capacity of 100-gigawatt hours (GWh) per year.   

“This memorandum of understanding is a necessary first step, prior to the signing of an investment agreement, which should allow the launch of a gigafactory capable of consolidating the position of a leading player in the automotive industry of the kingdom.  said the Moroccan Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence and Evaluation of Public Policies, Mohcine Jazouli, during the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding.

“Our group is happy to cooperate with Morocco on this project to contribute to decarbonization and the deployment of innovative energy solutions. The vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI has enabled Morocco to establish good economic relations with many countries around the world,” said the president of Gotion High-Tech, Li Zhen.

Gotion High-Tech is a leading Chinese manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles. In addition to China, the listed group has nearly 20,000 employees spread over several sites in Asia, Europe and North America.

Several car manufacturers, including Renault and Stellantis, as well as dozens of renowned equipment manufacturers such as Aptiv, Sumitomo and Valeo have factories in Morocco. In 2022, the automotive industry topped the country’s industrial exports, with 111 billion dirhams ($11.1 billion).
