Moroccans, First Beneficiaries of Residence Permits in Italy

Morocco has been at the top of the ranking of countries of origin (outside the European Union) of holders of residence permits in Italy since January 2020.

In total, 428,835 Moroccans have obtained this sesame, according to the German online portal Statista, which publishes statistics from data from institutes, market and opinion research, and the economic sector. Albania comes second on this list with 416,703 beneficiaries, followed by China (301,073), Ukraine (230,639), India (165,663), and the Philippines with 157,664 residence permits.

Overall, 23.7 million non-EU nationals lived in one of the Member States of the European Union on January 1, 2021, according to the Statistical Office of the European Union Eurostat. A foreign community that represents 5.3% of the EU population. 10.6 million of them reside in Germany, the country which concentrates the largest number of these nationals, ahead of Spain (5.4 million), France, and Italy (5.2 million people).
