Moroccans Expropriated by Israelis Compare Themselves to Palestinians

This is one of the direct effects of normalization with Israel. In Morocco, many citizens have been surprised by orders to release their real estate and land to Israelis who claim to be the legal owners.

These are Moroccan Jews who emigrated to Israel after the creation of this state in 1948. After the normalization agreements signed in 2020, many of them or their descendants returned to Morocco to reclaim “their property ”.

Having knocked on every door in vain, the Moroccans who found themselves in this situation opted for street protest actions, multiplying sit-ins and public gatherings.

In a video posted on TikTok, Moroccans participating in one of these actions spoke out. Some of them did not hesitate to compare what is happening to them to what the Israelis had been doing to the Palestinians in their own land for three-quarters of a century.

The gathering is taking place in Tangier in northern Morocco, a region where many cases have been reported. Given the number of protesters present, it seems that the phenomenon has taken on a large scale. “ What did the Israelis do to the Palestinians? They took them out of their lands and their homes. We too are experiencing the same thing,” said a demonstrator.

On Moroccan social networks, these kinds of videos are multiplying. Very recently, an influencer, still on TikTok, wondered if this is the consideration that Moroccans must pay to obtain Western Sahara.

The allusion is to the normalization agreements signed in 2020 under which the kingdom established diplomatic relations with Israel in return for the recognition by the United States of “Moroccan sovereignty” over Western Sahara. The agreements were negotiated under the aegis of former US President Donald Trump.

Since these agreements, direct airlines between the two countries have been set up by their respective airlines, and thousands of Israelis of Moroccan origin have flocked to the kingdom, some to revisit the country of their origins, others to reclaim property that they or their parents left behind when they left for Israel several decades ago.
