The president of Melilla defended this week the action of the Civil Guard in the events on the border with Morocco, on June 24. In an interview with TVE, taken up by the local press, Eduardo de Castro on the other hand pointed to the โ responsibilityโ of the auxiliary forces of Morocco in these events.
โThe Civil Guard was totally at a disadvantage, the means used were proportional. This is the big difference between a Civil Guard and a gendarme who uses disproportionate means and who does not have to give explanations as it should in a state of law, โhe castigated. The president of Melilla, who reacted to the images published as part of a BBC investigation, said that the images show the intervention of Moroccan forces. He also assured that the migrants who managed to enter Melilla that day and were injured โreceived health care in Spanish territory
For him, faced with a jump attempt involving 2,000 people, it was โimpossibleโ not to use riot control equipment. “It is used in these cases because there is no other way for people who are desperate and want to set foot in Melilla”, he justified.
The official insisted on defending the Civil Guard agents. โIt is impossible for the number of agents who had arrested 2,000 people because their means are rare and old; they did everything they could and more,โ he concluded.
