Tunisia: The Sinking of a Migrant Boat Leaves One Dead and 5 Missing

10 people have been rescued off the coast of Bizerte, northern Tunisia, according to a statement from National Guard spokesman Colonel Houssem Eddine Jebabli

Tunisian authorities announced on Tuesday the recovery of a lifeless body, the rescue of 10 people, and the active search for 5 others missing after the sinking of a boat carrying illegal immigrants off the coast of Bizerte, in the north of the country.

This is what emerges from a press release made public by the spokesman for the general administration of the National Guard, Colonel Houssem Eddine Jebabli.

Jabali said that “two naval guard patrols succeeded in rescuing 6 illegal migrants off Cape Ras Angela, in the governorate of Bizerte, on the night of Monday to Tuesday”.

According to the same source, in the first searches for the survivors, the boat operated by the migrants from Bizerte had two engine failures before capsizing, and 4 of the smugglers were able to swim to land, and their presence in their residence has been confirmed.

“A body was also recovered, and the search for 5 missing persons is still ongoing, carried out by the various land and sea units,” Jebabli said.

Since the beginning of 2022, the phenomenon of clandestine migration has increased considerably in Tunisia, due to the difficult economic conditions and the armed conflicts which are ravaging several other African countries.
