The UN official underlined, “the need for the various Libyan political forces to seek to reach the broadest possible consensus through a global and transparent process”.

The UN Special Adviser for Libya, Stephanie Williams, renewed her appeal to all actors to remain focused on the electoral process and maintain the existing calm in the country.

Stéphanie’s statements come during her meeting on Saturday with the members of the Libyan High Council of State, Belkacem Ikzit and Abdullah Jawan. The meeting focused on the political situation in the country, according to a tweet posted by Williams on Sunday.

“Yesterday, I met with the members of the High Council of State, Belkacem Ikzit and Abdullah Jawan, to discuss the current political situation, and I reaffirmed the need for the different political forces in Libya to seek the widest possible consensus, through a comprehensive and transparent process,” she wrote.

And Williams added: “I also renewed my call on all actors to continue to focus on the electoral process in accordance with the demand of the Libyan people and to maintain the existing calm in the country”.

On Friday, Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh said his government would announce, within the next two days, a roadmap for holding elections next June.

Despite this announcement, the Libyan institutions did not agree on a date for the holding of the elections, which once again threatens their organization at the set deadline. In addition, differences over the electoral law and the role of the judiciary in the electoral process have hampered the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections which were scheduled for December 24, 2021.

Libyans hope that the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections will help end the armed conflict that has plagued their oil-rich country for years.
