Inflation in Algeria: Prices Have More than Doubled in 20 Years

Inflation in Algeria stood at 9.3% in 2022. This is the highest variation since 2013, according to the National Statistics Office ( ONS), which has just published its consumer price index for the last ten years (2013-2022).

The index covers 8 product groups, subdivided into 63 subgroups. Two distinct indices are established: the national index and the price index in Algiers.

With a rate of 9.3%, the consumer price index experienced even more accelerated development than in 2021 (7.2%). Compared to 2001, the reference year of the index, the general price level was multiplied by 2.5, indicating the NSO.

However, not all products have undergone the same evolution.

In 2022, all product groups increased at the same rate as in 2021, except for “transport and communication” which experienced a decline in its rate of increase.

The general index is driven upwards by the “ food products” group, whose prices increased by 13.4%. Other changes are of the order of 7.1% for manufactured products and 3.4% for services.

The sharp increase in the prices of food goods is driven by the prices of agricultural products (+12.9%) and industrial food products (+13.8%). In 20 years, the prices of food products have multiplied by 2.7.

The other strong development in 2022 is that of the products of the “miscellaneous” group (11.6%), and the “group /span> » (7.2%). health” group and personal hygiene” whose prices increased by 11.1%, followed by those of the “education, culture and leisure

The ONS also notes that the prices of clothing and footwear increased by 6.7% in 2022, while products in the furniture and furnishings group increased by 4.0%.

Since 2001, the prices of clothing and shoes have increased 2.5 times.

Focusing on the evolution of the prices of food products, the ONS notes a general increase, except for the prices of chicken meat which fell in 2022 by 3.5%, after its surge of 43.6% in 2021.

The prices of red meats saw a very sharp increase (18.6%) in 2022, as did eggs, the price of which saw a “vertiginous-dizzying” increase. a> » (32.5%).

As for fruits and vegetables, they increased at the same rate as in 2021, around 10%. A widely consumed product, potatoes experienced a less marked rate of increase in 2022 than in 2021 (+18.3% compared to +47.7%). Fish prices increased by 2.4% in 2022.

While it had only increased by 0.2% recorded in 2020, the food price index exploded with two strong successive increases: 10.01% in 2021 and then 13.4% in 2022.

“All food subgroups contributed to this result”, underlines the ONS. In other words, no category of food products is spared from the rise in prices in Algeria.

Pieces of bread and cereals are characterized by an increase of 11.1%, milk, cheese and derivatives (14.2%), sugars and sweet products (11.3%), oils and fats (18.6%), coffee, tea and infusions (19.3%) and non-alcoholic drinks (11.1%).

Another significant increase in 2022 that should be noted is that of the prices of repair and maintenance of vehicles and automobile spare parts and accessories (11.5%).

Housing prices have also increased, but slightly. The “ housing and charges” group index increased by 2.4% in 2022. If rents increased only slightly (+1.5 %), maintenance costs increased sharply (10%), driven by the surge in plumbing prices (21.7%). Fuel prices saw a change of 1.9% in 2022, more than the increases of 0.4% and 0.5% in 2020 and 2021.

Since 2001, the general price level of this group (housing and utilities) has increased by 1.7.

In the health and personal hygiene category, the increase in 2022 was 7.2%, driven by the prices of prescription drugs (+10.1%), and toiletries (+9.8%).

Compared to the reference year 2001, the average price level of this group was multiplied by 2.1, and that of medical care and services by 3.9.
