While the International Court of Justice (ICJ) handed down its decision severely criticizing Israel in its action in Gaza, Algeria has indicated that it intends to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council devoted to the application of this decision.

According to an announcement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country will convene a meeting of the UN Security Council to guarantee the implementation of the decision taken on January 26 by the UN International Court of Justice concerning Israel.

“Algeria’s permanent mission to the United Nations was instructed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to request a meeting of the Security Council to give enforceable effect to the ruling of the International Court of Justice” of the UN, indicated the ministry in a press release.

Algiers also renewed its “high appreciation and support for South Africa for its referral” to the ICJ which “has just resoundingly recognized the merits of its approach”. “Algeria considers that the ICJ’s ruling announces the beginning of the end of the era of impunity,” continued the ministry cited by the Sputnik agency.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled against Israel and determined that South Africa had successfully argued that Israel’s conduct could plausibly amount to genocide. The court imposed several injunctions against Israel and reminded Israel that its decisions are binding, per international law.

In its order, the court did not grant South Africa’s request for a ceasefire, but this decision is nevertheless overwhelmingly in favor of South Africa’s case and will therefore likely increase international pressure for a ceasefire.

Whether Israel’s war in Gaza constitutes genocide will still take time, but today’s news will have significant political implications. Here are some thoughts.
