The first FIFA rankings of the year 2024 were released this Thursday! As expected, many changes are taking place following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which ended on Sunday with the success of Ivory Coast ahead of Nigeria (2-1).

The Elephants and the Super Eagles are of course at the heart of these changes. The Ivorians, crowned champions, made an impressive leap, going from 49th to 39th position in the world rankings (+10). As for the Nigerian troops, their progress is even more spectacular, with a jump from 42nd to 28th place (+14), thanks to their journey to the final.

This edition of the CAN also reshuffled the cards for the African podium. Tunisia, eliminated in the first round, saw its position fall both at the continental level and in the world rankings, going from 28th to 41st place. Algeria, also eliminated in the first round, experienced a similar fall (13), tumbling from 30th to 43rd place, relegating it to seventh African rank, while it was positioned just behind the podium before the competition.

Morocco and Senegal remain in the top 3

Despite performances below expectations, with elimination in the round of 16, Senegal and Morocco maintain their position on the African podium. Their world ranking is even increasing, an apparent “anomaly” which can be explained by their positive results during the group stage. Senegal moves from 20th to 17th place, while Morocco, first on the African continent, rises from 13th to 12th position. Special mention finally to Angola which, thanks to its quarter-final at the CAN, jumped 24 places and joined the African Top 20.
