“I met my brother Geoffrey Onyeama (the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, editor’s note) in Abuja. We had fruitful discussions on the strengthening of bilateral relations and the implementation of strategic projects under development, in particular the trans-Saharan Lagos-Algiers highway, the trans-Saharan pipeline and the fiber optic cable ”, indicated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sabri Boukadoum, after his meeting with his Nigerian counterpart.

Through this trip, Algeria wanted to relaunch the old Nigeria-Algeria gas pipeline project via Niger. In vain since the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Nigeria is an influential member and which has the largest gas reserves on the continent, decided at a meeting held in Ouagadougou ( Burkina Faso), to continue discussions with the promoters of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project (Nmgp) with a view to the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to lead to a detailed study of a project unique gas pipeline in West Africa. By this choice, the ECOWAS countries bury the Algerian trans-Saharan project.
