Fiat, vehicles less than three years old, Renault, Hyundai. Good news is piling up in the automotive sector in Algeria.

It all started with the announcement on Sunday, October 9 by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of the return to importing vehicles less than three years old.

Less than a week after this announcement, a framework agreement was signed in Algiers between the Ministry of Industry and the Stellantis group for the establishment of a Fiat brand factory in Algeria. The next day, the CEO of Renault Production Algeria announced the forthcoming resumption of activities at the French brand’s Algerian factory near Oran.

On Sunday, President Tebboune gave the government a week to publish the specifications for the import of new vehicles.

And on Wednesday, it was the general manager of TMC, which owns the Algerian factory of Hyundai, who announced the resumption of assembly activities from this Thursday, October 27.

Hyundai Algeria can produce 70,000 vehicles per year

“With the support of the higher authorities, it was decided to set the date for the resumption of this factory on Thursday, October 27”, announced Wednesday Khaled Djaballah, CEO of TMC in an interview with the Tiaret station of Algerian Radio.“We recalled 158 employees to relaunch two assembly lines initially. We have a program to restart five other production lines, which will require the recall of 780 employees (…) The latter received training from the partner Hyundai. They worked in this factory,” he added, pointing out that TMC employees benefited from a voluntary departure operation after the closure of the factory.

Djaballah indicated that the equipment of the Hyundai Algeria factory is ready to restart the assembly of cars of the South Korean brand. “Initially, the plant will restart with the raw material available for the assembly of 2,344 cars, for a period of three months to a year. The second phase will be launched next January, the other lines will be opened gradually,” he explained.

He indicated that the Hyundai Algeria factory can produce 70,000 vehicles per year, with its seven assembly lines.

Like the other vehicle assembly plants in Algeria, that of the Hyundai brand was closed at the beginning of 2020, after the removal of the device for importing SKD / CKD kits for cars.
