On Monday, Israel officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara. An announcement that did not leave Algeria unmoved, which considers that this diplomatic decision is a “flagrant violation” of international law.

For Algiers, Morocco and Israel defend the same ideology, the same vision of colonization. And this decision, taken by Israel and announced by the royal cabinet in Rabat, thus demonstrates ” the harmony of the occupiers’ policies, their complicity in the violation of international law”.

In its statement, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues by denouncing ” the encroachment of the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and of the Saharawi people to self-determination”.

While bilateral Morocco-Algeria relations have been broken since August 2021, this step is seen by the Algerian government as ” a new link in the series of maneuvers and the policy of headlong rush adopted by the Moroccan occupation”.

Rabat advocates for Western Sahara, where the conflict for this vast region has been opposed since 1975 by Morocco to the separatists of the Polisario Front supported by Algeria, an autonomy plan under its exclusive sovereignty. The Polisario, for its part, is calling for a self-determination referendum under the aegis of the UN, planned when a ceasefire was signed in 1991, but never materialized.
