The famous American newspaper New York Times has ranked the Tassili N’ajjer massif among 52 places to visit in 2023. “Virtually unknown to the outside world, the Tassili n’Ajjer is eight times the size of Yellowstone”, recalled the American daily.

“Often overshadowed by its neighbor, the Moroccan tourism giant, Algeria – a stone’s throw from Mediterranean Europe and just a three-hour flight from London – has recently relaxed its visa policy, allowing much easier exploration of the country,” said the same media.

While most visitors tend to stick to the coastal north, which contains some of the region’s best-preserved Roman ruins, Africa’s largest country also contains its largest national park, according to the same source.

Virtually unknown to the outside world, Tassili n’Ajjer is eight times the size of Yellowstone. At the heart of the vast Saharan landscape of sand and stone lie the deep red dunes and pillars of the Tadrart Rouge.

Accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicle, this surprisingly striking national park is home to thousands of ancient rock art, dating back to when the desert was a thriving savannah, as well as a vibrant nomadic Tuareg culture.

In February 2022, the Director of Tourism and Handicrafts (DTA) of the wilaya of Djanet, Alamine Hamadi, announced that 8,551 tourists, nationals and foreigners, visited Tassili N’ajjer, (extreme south-east of the country), since the opening of last October of the Saharan tourism season.

Mr. Alamine Hamadi specified that the region recorded an influx of 660 foreign tourists, of different nationalities, and 7,891 national tourists.
