ALGIERS- The requirements specification of the automobile sub-contracting sector has been finalized and submitted to government, said Tuesday in Algiers Industry and Mining Minister Abdessalem Bouchouareb.

The minister was attending the launch of a twining between Algeria and the European Union to develop the industrial innovation in Algeria.

Sub-contracting henceforth is a “concrete regulatory support” which accompanies this wealth and job creator sector, as recommended in the new orientation bill on small and medium enterprises, adopted recently by the Parliament.

In this regard, “we have requested to our partners (Renault, Volkswagen and further car manufacturers) to be associated in this sub-contracting policy to develop the profession,” said the minister.

“We have opened our market to the partners. In return, we demanded stakes for the spare parts we manufacture ourselves,” he explained.

Bouchouareb said that the car industry in Algeria made progress “despite several issues and difficulties.”

Asked by the press on possible impact of the import licences on the Algeria-EU Association Agreement, Bouchouareb said that they would not impact the agreement since they have been introduced in a difficult economic situation for Algeria.

“Any country facing financial downturn situation has to review its priorities. We have taken no step which is contradictory to the Agreement clauses,” concluded Bouchoureb.
