Algeria maintains its dominant position as the main supplier of natural gas to Spain in 2023. In July, it was again the leading gas exporter, delivering a total of 9106 gigawatt hours (GWh), which has covered 28.7% of Spanish monthly demand, according to data provided by the Spanish energy infrastructure management operator, Enagás, reported by local media.

In the first seven months of the year, Algeria supplied more than 59,100 GWh to Spain, meeting 25% of total demand until July 2023. In doing so, Algeria is ahead of Russia, which supplied 49,909 GWh, thus covering 21.1% of Spain’s demand for natural gas in 2023.

Russia was also the second biggest contributor in July, supplying 8,764 GWh, or 27.6% of the total, according to Europa Press. The United States ranks third, with a 19.1% share of total natural gas demand this year, followed by Nigeria, with 13.9%.

Algeria regained the top spot as Spain’s gas supplier in April, overtaking the United States and Russia. This position was consolidated in May, with a supply of 9,824 GWh, representing 28.3% of total Spanish gas imports, and marking a growth of 8% compared to the previous year.

In addition to the regular transport of gas through the Medgaz pipeline, Sonatrach, the Algerian hydrocarbon company, has reactivated shipments of LNG carriers to Spain as early as April, according to a report by the Corporation of Strategic Petroleum Products Reserves. (Corsica), under the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition. This recovery was marked by a large-scale gas shipment in 16 months, totaling 31% of the gas supply from Algeria.
