Algeria will host the 17th session of the conference of the Parliamentary Union of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (UP-OCI) on January 29 and 30, under the high patronage of the Algerian President, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said a statement from the National People’s Assembly (APN) on Wednesday.
Organized by the Algerian Parliament at the International Conference Center (CIC) “Abdelatif Rahal” under the theme “Islamic World: Challenges of Modernization and Development”, with the participation of several parliaments of OIC member countries, the conference part of “the strengthening of the role of Algeria in the various international parliamentary fora”.
The meeting will constitute “a forum to strengthen joint action and the efforts of the Islamic world to occupy the place that befits it as a global force which should have an eminent role, particularly in the current geopolitical and economic context marked by instability and relentless dominationโ.
Three days before the holding of the conference, several meetings will be held, namely the 48th meeting of the executive committee, the meeting of the specialized standing committees, the consultative meetings of the Arab, African and Asian groups, the 10th conference of Islamic parliaments and the meetings structures within the Union.
Algeria had hosted last March the work of the 47th meeting of the executive committee during which it was unanimously decided to hold this session of the conference in Algeria, in view of “its weight and its role pivot in this global parliamentary body”.
Currently comprising 54 member parliaments, the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member Countries held its founding congress on June 17, 1999 and decided on the location of its permanent headquarters, established in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
