Algeria: Durum Wheat Production Covers 95% Of the Country’s Needs

Algerian Agriculture Minister Abdelhafedh Hani said that durum wheat production covers 95 percent of the country’s durum needs.

The Minister of Agriculture thus indicated, during his appearance last night on private Algerian television EnnaharTV,  that last season’s durum wheat production was significant and could cover national needs by 90 to 95 percent.

Regarding production, Mr. Hani specified that it amounted to 4.1 million tonnes (41 million quintals). While adding: “65 percent of the durum wheat produced is sufficient for the production of dough”.

According to him, mass consumption is on the table for soft wheat, which is intended for the bread industry. In this regard, he says: “We aim to cover 50% of consumption, based on local production”.

Algeria is considered one of the biggest importers of wheat in the world, especially soft wheat, which is used to produce flour for the bread industry.

Algeria produces about 4.1 million tons of both types

Algeria consumes between 9 and 12 million tonnes of soft and durum wheat annually. It mainly imports it from abroad, notably from France, and in limited quantities from Canada.

The average annual import of, according to official data, is about 7.8 million tons per year, of both types. Imports represent on average 75 percent of consumption.

Algeria recorded a production amounting to only 1.3 million tons during the 2021 harvest season. This is according to official data. Which is the weakest in the country for decades.
