At least 34 people were killed and 12 injured on Wednesday in a collision between a coach and a utility vehicle near Tamanrasset, Civil Protection announced.

The accident, followed by a fire, occurred when the coach linking Adrar to Tamanrasset, in the far south of Algeria, about 2,000 km from the capital Algiers, hit a commercial vehicle, clarified the Civil Protection. At least 34 people were killed and 12 injured in the crash.

Most of the victims died charred, according to several local media. According to civil protection, the bus transported travelers between the two towns in the Algerian Sahara, Tamanrasset, which has an airport and more than 150,000 inhabitants, and Adrar, where only about 2,000 people live. Victim extraction and evacuation operations continue.

The speed of motorists, including public transport drivers, is the main cause of road accidents in Algeria, according to the National Delegation of Road Safety, a government agency. In 2022, Algeria recorded nearly 22,980 traffic accidents which left 3,409 dead and 30,479 injured, according to the national delegate for road safety, Nacef Abdelhakim.
