China Welcomes Algeria’s Request to Join BRICS Group

“China welcomes Algeria’s willingness to join the BRICS group and supports its efforts to achieve this goal.” This is what was mentioned in the joint Algerian-Chinese declaration made public today Tuesday, July 18, 2023 in favor of the State visit made by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to China, on invitation from his Chinese counterpart, Mr. Xi-Jinping.

China has once again reaffirmed its support for Algeria’s membership of the BRICS group. In the joint Algerian-Chinese declaration, made public today at the end of the broad and face-to-face discussions between the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his Chinese counterpart, Mr. Xi-Jinping, it was mentioned that “China welcomes Algeria’s willingness to join the BRICS group and supports its efforts to achieve this goal”.

“The Algerian side has once again informed China of the steps taken to request Algeria’s membership of the BRICS group, and of the motivations for this step, in particular the fundamental transformations that the Algerian economy is experiencing and its aspirations to follow. pace of current developments in the global economy. The Chinese side has welcomed Algeria’s willingness to join this group and supports its efforts to achieve this goal,” said the joint statement published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.

“The Algerian side welcomed China’s position in this regard and its intention to support Algeria in all stages of the implementation of this project,” it added.

The two parties also spoke on several other regional and international issues.

To this end, with regard to Palestine, “the two parties stressed the need to resolve the Palestinian question in accordance with international law and the resolutions of international legality which enshrine the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent and fully sovereign on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital”. In the same vein, the Chinese side also hailed “the tireless efforts made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to unite the Palestinian factions and achieve reconciliation and Palestinian unity, which culminated in the Algiers Declaration”.

Regarding the question of Western Sahara, “both parties affirmed their support for efforts aimed at achieving a permanent and just solution within the framework of international legitimacy, in particular United Nations resolutions, so as to guarantee the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara through a process consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations”.

Furthermore, with regard to the situation in Ukraine, “both parties called for the settlement of conflicts by peaceful means through dialogue, negotiation and respect for recognized international law and the purposes and principles of the Charter of Nations United”. “The security of one country cannot be achieved at the expense of other countries,” the joint statement added. It is also a question, “not to resort to unilateral sanctions and other coercive measures, in order to avoid violating international law and undermining the living conditions of the peoples of the countries concerned”.

Finally, “the Algerian side reaffirmed its support for the principle of the unity of China” and that, as a result, “Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory”, opposing, de facto, “Taiwan independence’ in any form. Algeria also supports “China’s position on human rights issues, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Tibet, etc. and opposes attempts to politicize the human rights issue. or its use as a means of pressure in international relations”.
