Historical trading partners, Mauritania and Algeria have recently shown their desire to increase the level of their trade, based on road, maritime and air interconnection projects.

Algeria authorized by presidential decree the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed in December 2021 with Mauritania, relating to the construction of the Tindouf-Zouerate road, which will interconnect the two countries. This constitutes progress towards the realization of the project then initiated, on the occasion of the visit of the Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani (photo, on the left), to Algiers.

The road, intended to increase trade between the two countries, should extend over 775 km and link the southwest of Algiers to the northwest of Mauritania. The memorandum of understanding provides in particular that its financing will be provided by the Algerian State. Mauritania, for its part, will take care of the legal, administrative and logistical aspects, tax facilities and the supply of the necessary local materials.

The project is included in a larger commercial plan led by Algeria to reach the gates of West Africa, given Mauritania’s proximity to Senegal. Apart from the land route, Algeria also devotes areas of this policy to the strengthening of maritime and air links with the aforementioned countries.
