The volume of trade in agricultural products between Russia and Algeria has exploded over the past nine months, said Russian Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev. Meat, vegetables, dairy products, everything goes there.

Farmers and breeders in Russia and Algeria can smile. Trade turnover between the two countries has doubled in these sectors over the past nine months, as announced by Russian Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev.

Trade in agricultural products amounted to $700 million over this period. The Maghreb country also remains Russia’s third trading partner on the continent, with a trade volume of more than $2 billion over the first eight months of 2023, all sectors combined.

“Among African states, Algeria today ranks third in terms of trade turnover with Russia […] After nine months, the trade volume of bilateral trade in agricultural products has doubled, amounting to nearly 700 million dollars”, explained Dmitri Patrouchev following the meeting of the Russian-Algerian intergovernmental commission.

The weather also seems to remain good, since Moscow intends to further increase its exports of cereals, meat, and dairy products to Algeria, underlined the minister. The same refrain for Algerian products, whose import and demand have increased in Russia.

Wheat, poultry, and tomatoes

A long-time partner of Algeria, particularly in terms of armaments, Russia has recently strengthened its exchanges in the agricultural sector. Russian breeders had notably obtained authorization to export poultry meat to Algeria at the end of September.

Plagued by recurring episodes of drought, the Maghreb country has also turned to Russian wheat in recent months, becoming the third largest buyer in this segment. A new strategy which is to the detriment of French wheat, considered more expensive by around 20 dollars per tonne, as Arkadi Zlotchevski, president of the Russian Grain Union, recently explained to Sputnik.

Algerian farmers are seeking to invest in the Russian tomato market. Leaders of the Algerian group Souakri, for example, accompanied President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Moscow during his visit last June.
