In a regional and international context marked by security challenges at the borders, Algeria is preparing to allocate a budget of $21.6 billion for its defense in 2024, according to the finance bill. This decision reflects the country’s commitment to guaranteeing its security and preserving its sovereignty in the face of emerging threats.

A slightly declining defense budget

Although the budget of the Ministry of National Defense for 2024 is down slightly compared to the previous year, it remains considerable, standing at more than 2,962 billion dinars, the equivalent of 21.6 billion dollars. This substantial sum will be mainly allocated to financing arms contracts, and modernizing the military arsenal, acquiring modern defense systems, and training troops.

According to information, the government has planned a budget of 469.288 billion dinars for National Defense, 756.715 billion dinars for logistics and multifunctional support, and 1700 billion dinars for the general administration of services of the Ministry of National Defense.

Algeria in the regional context

With this substantial budget, Algeria has the largest defense budget in Africa and ranks third in the Arab world, preceded only by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to a recent report from the American site “Global Fire Power.” This position reflects the commitment of the Algerian authorities to defend the country’s territory in the face of current challenges and to prepare for any eventuality.

The regional and international context is marked by persistent tensions, which force Algeria to adapt to circumstances and protect itself against potential threats. In addition, new environmental, health, electronic, and cyber threats have forced the Algerian army to acquire advanced equipment and weapons systems, strengthen its technical capabilities, and improve the efficiency of its armed forces.

Algeria has signed several contracts for the acquisition of modern defense systems, advanced aircraft, and latest-generation ships. A significant part of military spending is also spent on training and improving the skills of military personnel, as well as optimizing combat units.

Commitment to national security

Lieutenant General Saïd Chengriha, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army, stressed that “the strengthening of national defense capabilities, the modernization and development of the different components of the armed forces constitute one of the main bases on which the National People’s Army builds its strategy to face various challenges and risks. » He recalled that the Algerian army will remain constantly ready to counter any threat that could affect the security and stability of the country, whatever the size or nature while preserving the legacy of the martyrs and ensuring the future of generations to come.

The allocation of this important budget for defense in 2024 confirms Algeria’s unwavering commitment to protecting its borders and guaranteeing its national security.
