Former Algerian presidential adviser Said Bouteflika was sentenced on Tuesday to an 8-year prison term for his involvement in corruption-related cases.

Thus, the Court of Algiers confirmed the verdict pronounced in first instance against the brother and former adviser of ex-president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, prosecuted in the case of “occult financing of the presidential election campaign canceled of April 2019”.

The verdict of the first instance (4 years in prison), pronounced by the economic and financial penal division of the Court of Sidi M’hamed (Algiers) against the former businessman Ali Haddad was also confirmed.

Saïd Bouteflika and Ali Haddad are being prosecuted in this case for “money laundering, influence peddling, and failure to declare assets”, recall the local media.

The vast investigations into corruption and nepotism launched after the resignation in April 2019 of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, under pressure from an unprecedented popular protest movement “Hirak”, have led to a series of trials that are still ongoing.

Several personalities and former political leaders, as well as powerful bosses, senior civil servants, and senior army officers are tried in the context of these trials. They are prosecuted, in particular, for corruption and illicit enrichment.
