Pending a decision from the government to resume flights and open borders, the national airline, Air Algeria, is ready to take off again. More information below.

To protect itself and arm itself against the incredible outbreak of the coronavirus which is hitting the whole world hard, the country closed its doors on March 17, 2020. Thirteen months have passed and the competent authorities have still not pronounced on a date that allowed the planes of the national air carrier to fly over the sky. In the hope of seeing the borders open, Air Algérie is preparing for a possible resumption of flights.

Indeed, the national airline is hard at work to take to the skies again. According to what the specialized media Visa Algeria reports in an article published this Thursday, May 06, 2021, Air Algérie is working on a summer flight program.

The same source specifies that Bordeaux airport (France) has lifted the veil on several air links of the Algerian carrier. In detail, the airline intends to make three (03) flights between Algiers and Bordeaux per week. Said flights are scheduled for Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

The said program will begin, plans Air Algérie, on June 1, 2021. Algiers is not, however, the only point of departure for the public company. In fact, Air Algérie has scheduled another flight per week between Oran and the aforementioned city. Also as part of its preparations, Air Algérie has scheduled other flights with Nice (France).

Borders closed: Air Algérie on the brink of the abyss

The wait has lasted so long for the airline which is struggling to pay the salaries of its relatively large workforce. In financial difficulties, Air Algérie only provides domestic and cargo flights. Those for repatriation were suspended, let us remember, on March 1, 2021.

So far, no decision has been taken on the resumption of its so-called special flights. The aforementioned program is, for its part, provisional. It will only materialize on the ground following a decision from the Algerian government. In any case, according to specialists, the resumption of flights depends on the evolution of the epidemiological situation of the country.

That outside of the latter will also be taken into account if we trust the experts. The appearance of the Indian variant can even complicate matters. Despite several calls for the opening of borders, the competent authorities, therefore, remain cautious.
