Spain has just initiated discussions with Morocco to reactivate the maritime link between Tarfaya and Fuerteventura.

This route, on hold since 2008, is the shortest between the islands and Morocco, only 90 kilometers apart. A resumption of this sea route represents a major challenge for the region, indicates the local press.

Progress is expected at the next meeting on January 11 and 12. On this occasion, a Moroccan delegation, representing the maritime and port sectors, will visit the Port del Rosario in Fuerteventura. These exchanges aim to realize the Canaries-Tarfaya maritime connection project, a potentially beneficial link for both regions.

The Canadian government is coordinating closely with the State to ensure the viability of the project. A preparatory meeting is planned to examine the logistical aspects and necessary resources. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of health services and border control, to ensure smooth implementation.

According to Luis Padilla, Director General of Relations with Africa of the Government of the Canary Islands, this initiative is strategic, aimed at strengthening trade and tourism, highlighting the importance of mastering all operational and logistical aspects to avoid possible obstacles.

As a reminder, trade between the Canary Islands and Morocco is mainly focused on the export of iron, steel, mineral fuels, and oils, and on the import of marine products and aluminum.
