The scandal was revealed by the program “The 4 truths”. A company was importing large amounts of domestic waste into Tunisia from Italy for unknown purposes. The Tunisian company would receive 48 euros for each tonne of waste imported.

These are various types of waste, including hospital waste, the import of which does not comply with national and international standards.

According to the spokesperson for the Sousse court of the first instance, a judicial investigation was opened for this purpose. Speaking on Mosaic FM, he said that this investigation was opened following the collection of certain data.

70 waste containers from Italy, carrying 120 tonnes of waste, have just arrived in Tunisia. More than 200 other containers are still waiting in the port of Sousse.

The Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, that it has ordered the opening of an investigation into a contract concluded by a Tunisian company for the import of waste from Italy, without disclosing the name of the company.

The Department of Local Affairs and the Environment did not deny this market in a press release. Still, it specified that it did not grant any authority to the company involved in this affair and that it “no ‘will not hesitate to take all appropriate legal measures in the face of this kind of overrun.”
