New London-based film club Maghreb Ciné goes from strength to strength, with good turnouts at their first two screenings.
Maghreb Ciné is a new film club dedicated to films from and of the Maghreb and its diasporas, and launched at the end of February 2017.
Their first two screenings were iconic films La Fille de Keltoum and Le Grand Voyage. The audiences were a mix of North Africans and Brits, and the film club returns with a third screening later this month – Abdellatif Kechiche’s Couscous (La Graine et le Mulet; The Secret of the Grain).
Couscous is a family drama focusing on the travails of an ageing North African émigré who, after being made redundant from his shipyard job, attempts to make real his dream of opening a restaurant. However, the main dish is cooked by his ex-wife, who is renowned among family and friends for the quality of her food, and the restaurant is situated on a barge. While the restaurant gets caught up in bureaucratic red tape, the tensions and connections that make or break a family are brought bubbling to the surface.
