Vehicles Less than 3 Years Old: Algeria Authorizes the Import

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced this Sunday, October 9, during an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, new measures concerning the import of cars, in particular those less than three years old.

The automotive market in Algeria has been stagnating since 2019. With the shutdown of assembly units and the suspension of the import of new vehicles, the prices of used cars on the national market are experiencing increases vertiginously.

Imports of cars less than 3 years old: Tebboune’s instructions

Last Thursday, the Prime Minister raised the question of the automobile in Algeria before the members of the National People’s Assembly (APN). In response to questions from MPs on this subject, Aïmene Benabderrahmane affirmed that the government was working to find “  radical solutions  ” to the matter of importing vehicles.

According to him, “the government is about to finalize the development of a new strategy aimat finding radical solutions to the automobile file”. ed This strategy aims to “deal with the dysfunctions recorded in this important sector”.

In the same vein, the first government official mentioned the “desire of international car manufacturers to invest in Algeria” to produce new vehicles, stressing that negotiations with international players are at an advanced stage.

This Sunday, October 9, the Head of State Abdelmadjid Tebboune gave instructions concerning the automobile file. They concern the importation of new and used cars less than three years old, but also the specifications governing the activity of dealers.

Return to the import of used cars in Algeria under conditions

According to the press release that sanctioned the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers held this Sunday, devoted to the presentation of the 2023 finance bill, Tebboune ordered the government to authorize Algerian individuals to import cars less than three years old, but with some conditions to respect.

Indeed, he ordered “the opening of the importation of cars less than three years old to citizens, with their own financial means and for their personal use, and not for commercial purposes”, indicates the press release published by the Presidency of the Republic. No date has been set for the entry into force of the measure.

In addition, he gave instructions to “allow foreign manufacturers to import cars to resell them in Algeria, in parallel with the continuous monitoring, on the ground, of the process of setting up a real automobile industry in the best time limit”.

He also instructed the effect of “the presentation of the specifications of the car dealerships, at the next Council of Ministers, for a final settlement, before the end of the year”, adds the same source.
