Unemployment Rate Rises to 16.1%

The unemployment rate in Tunisia increased during the first quarter of 2023 to reach 16.1%, against 15.2% during the fourth quarter of 2022, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics.

The number of registered unemployed during the same period reached 655.8 thousand, compared to 624.6 thousand in the fourth quarter of 2022, an increase of 31.2 thousand.

The unemployment rate for men fell to 13.9%, from 12.9% in the fourth quarter of 2022, and that of women to 21.2% in the first quarter of 2023, from 20.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 increased during the first quarter of 2023, reaching 40.2%, compared to 38.8% during the fourth quarter of 2022.

The male unemployment rate rose over the same period to 42.3%, compared to 38.6% during the fourth quarter of 2022. Female unemployment fell to 35.3% during the first quarter of 2023 compared to 39.1% during the fourth quarter of 2022.

Unemployment among holders of higher diplomas decreased by around 0.9 points to reach 23.1% during the first quarter of 2023 compared to 24% during the fourth quarter of 2022. It is 15.2%, for men and 29.4% for women.

The results of the employment survey for the first quarter of the year 2023 showed that the active population in Tunisia reached 4,078.1 thousand, against 4,124.2 thousand during the fourth quarter of the year 2022, i.e. a decrease of 46.1 thousand.

The active population is divided between 2,856,000 men and 1,222.2,000 women, that is to say respectively 70% and 30% of the total active population.

Thus, the activity rate fell in the first quarter of 2023 by an estimated 0.5 points, to reach 46%, after being around 46.5% in the fourth quarter of 2022.
