Along with 18 countries, Morocco did not participate in the vote to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council. Details.

Of the 193 member countries of the General Assembly, 24 voted against the “suspension” of Moscow – the second in the history of the UN after the ousting of Libya in 2011 -, initiated by the United States. And 58 countries abstained, but the abstentions were not counted in the required two-thirds majority among the only votes for and against.

Eighteen countries did not take part in the vote, including Lebanon and Morocco.

Among the countries that voted against was China, which denounced a “hasty approach”, putting “fuel on the fire” as well as a “dangerous precedent”. Iran, Kazakhstan, and Cuba also voted against it. Unsurprisingly, Russia,

As a reminder, Morocco was already absent when the United Nations General Assembly adopted, on March 2 and 24, two resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Foreign Affairs had explained on March 2 that Morocco’s absence from the vote on the March 2 resolution “cannot be the subject of any interpretation in relation to its position of principle concerning the situation between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, as reaffirmed in the Press Release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, dated February 26, 2022”.

The said press release specified that “the Kingdom of Morocco has always worked to promote the non-use of force for the settlement of disputes between States. It calls for the continuation and intensification of dialogue and negotiation between the parties to put an end to this conflict and encourages all initiatives and actions to this end”.
