Thousands of people demonstrated Thursday in the capital, Tunis, in support of the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip which is suffering for the sixth consecutive day a total siege and intensive Israeli raids.

At the call of the National Committee to Support the Palestinian Resistance – a coalition of political parties and organizations, including the Tunisian General Labor Union – (Ugtt/central union), thousands of Tunisians took part in a march, part of the headquarters of the trade union center to reach Avenue Habib Bourguiba, the central artery of the capital, passing through Avenue de la Liberté.

The Anadolu correspondent reported that demonstrators waved Palestinian and Tunisian flags and chanted slogans such as “by our soul, by our blood, we sacrifice ourselves for you Palestine” and “Palestine is Arab, no capitulation nor compromise”.

“Gaza, Gaza… symbol of pride”, “We are all the men of Mohammed Deif (Chief of the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement)”, “From Tunisia to Palestine, one and only people”, were also chanted by the demonstrators.

On the sidelines of the demonstration, Sami Tahri, member of the executive board of the Ugtt, declared to Anadolu: “These marches will continue to mobilize Tunisians and encourage them to make donations for the benefit of Palestine.”

“The Tunisian people defend the just Palestinian cause as well as the right of the Palestinian people to live on their lands and their right to crush the occupation,” Tahri added.

On behalf of the National Committee to Support the Palestinian Resistance, the head of the Ugtt called on “all Arabs, particularly those residing in Europe, to mobilize to put pressure on with the aim of putting an end to the support of European states to the Zionist entity (Israel).”

For his part, the president of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (Snjt), Ziad Dabbar, declared to Anadolu: “We are not only in solidarity with the Palestinian people, we squarely embrace the Palestinian cause.”

“We consider ourselves at war against the Zionist entity since the Israeli aggression against the town of Hammam al-Shat (in the southern suburbs of the capital Tunis, when Israel bombed the headquarters of the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine on October 1, 1985) and the assassination of Tunisian engineer Mohamed Zaouari (a leader of the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades) in the city of Sfax (south-east), on December 15, 2016.

At dawn on October 7, the Islamic resistance movement Hamas and other Palestinian factions launched Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” from Gaza, in response to “relentless attacks by Israeli forces and settlers against the Palestinian people, their property and their holy sites, in particular the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied part of East Jerusalem.

For its part, the Israeli army launched Operation Iron Swords and continues to carry out intensive raids on many areas of the Gaza Strip, where more than two million Palestinians live who are suffering from the deterioration of their living conditions due to an Israeli blockade imposed since 2006.
