The member of the Central Council of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP), Bayrem Hamada, affirmed, this Friday, September 29, 2023, that the pricing of olive oil is dependent on the demand of the global olive oil market, in general, and Tunisian, in particular.

In an interview with Jawhara, he agreed with official estimates, to say that production would reach 200 thousand tonnes, the total consumption of Tunisians does not exceed 35 thousand tonnes, he stressed.

The remaining production will be devoted to export, given that the Tunisian state needs, more than ever, foreign currency reserves generated by olive oil.

The head of the agricultural organization added that the cost of producing olive oil has increased compared to past years, as the irrigated areas have reached 55%, which requires permanent interest to guarantee it. the productivity.

According to preliminary estimates, the price of olive oil would vary nationally, between 20 and 22 dinars/Liter. While the world price would be between 10 and 12 euros, and the price of Tunisian olive oil would reach 17 euros/liter, he stressed.

The Ministry of Agriculture announced in mid-September that production for this 2023/2024 olive oil season is estimated, according to preliminary forecasts, at one million tonnes of olives, the equivalent of 200 thousand liters of oil, i.e. + 11% compared to last year’s production.
