During this meeting, Kaïs Saïed stressed “”Tunisia’s determination to preserve the solid and historic ties of brotherhood and cooperation established between Tunis and Damascus”.

The Tunisian president, in this sense, indicated that his country is determined to “intensify consultation and cooperation on the various bilateral files in the various fields”, reports the TAP agency.

According to the same source, the Tunisian Head of State recalled ”the common ties shared by the two countries in terms of civilization and culture, underlining the common will to boost bilateral relations and to meet all the challenges in order to realize the aspirations of the two brotherly peoples.

Note that the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs is on a three-day visit to Tunisia.

Diplomatic relations between Tunisia and Syria have been severed since February 4, 2012, by decision of former President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki, due to the crisis in Syria.

In July 2014, during the time of former President Béji Caïd Essebsi, Tunisia opened an office of administrative and consular services for the benefit of the Tunisian community in Syria.
