The Regional Director of Health of Tunis, Tarek Ben Nasr, announced this Wednesday, November 23, the death of an 08-year-old girl from Shigellosis disease.

The deceased died on Sunday, following complications due to this pathology caused by the Shigella bacterium, the severe forms of which are formidable.

In a statement to Mosaïque, he said that “the little girl presented the symptoms of the bacteria, and died following complications, she could have been saved, if she had been taken care of as soon as she contracted the bacteria. But the fact of having been brought back to the hospital late prevented that from happening”.

“The Shigella bacteria could cause death, hence the need to take the necessary precautions, including hand hygiene and sterilization of vegetables and fruits, before consuming them,” he recommended.

The Regional Health Director of Tunis indicated that 69 contaminations by the bacterium, Shigella, have been identified among children since last July, who were admitted to the same hospital, and have mostly recovered.

Currently, 11 children infected with the bacteria are bedridden in Bab Saâdoun hospital, he said, excluding that there are cases in the emergency services.

He insisted on the need to consult a doctor at the onset of symptoms (fever, diarrhea, and stomach aches).
