A passenger train derailment left two dead and 34 injured in eastern Tunisia.

Two people were killed and 34 injured when a passenger train derailed and overturned in eastern Tunisia on Wednesday, SNCFT, the national railway company, announced.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight (23:00 GMT) when a train linking Tunis to the southern city of Gabès derailed near Msaken, a town about 150 kilometers from the capital city.

The driver and a passenger were killed and 34 other passengers were injured, SNCFT said.

“An investigation has been opened to elucidate the circumstances and causes of the accident and to determine responsibility,” added SNCFT.

This accident occurs 15 months after a collision between two trains in the south of the capital leaving a hundred injured.

In December 2016, five people were killed and more than 50 were injured in the same area when a train and a public bus collided.

Blamed on faulty infrastructure, the accident led to the dismissal of the general manager of the SNCFT at the time.

In June 2015, Tunisia suffered one of the worst rail accidents in its recent history when 18 people died in a collision between a train and a truck in El Fahes, about 60 kilometers south of Tunis.

The collision was caused by a signaling fault at a level crossing.
