Tunisia: 308 irregular migration attempts thwarted in 5 months

Tunisian maritime authorities have succeeded in thwarting 308 attempts at irregular migration to Italy in five months, National Guard spokesman Houssem Eddine Jebabli said on Sunday.

Jebabli also reported to Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP / Official) that during the period between January 1 to May 31, 2021, 4,376 people, including 1,845 Tunisians and 2,531 foreigners, were intercepted while they were planning to cross illegally maritime borders.

According to official statistics from the General Directorate of Borders, units of the Maritime Guard in different governorates had thwarted 224 irregular migration operations by intercepting 1,595 Tunisians and 1,962 foreigners attempting to cross the maritime borders into Italy during the last five months of 2021.

In addition, the security units under the General Directorate of Public Security succeeded in thwarting 84 irregular migration operations by thwarting the attempts of 819 individuals, including 550 people of Tunisian nationality, to cross the maritime borders illegally to the United States. Italy, according to official data from the General Directorate of Public Security.

As part of international cooperation, these operations are carried out in coordination with Italy and Libya, recalled Houssem Eddine Jebabli.
