This Schengen Area Country Opens an Embassy in Algeria

Slovenia, a member of the Schengen area, has announced the forthcoming opening of an embassy in Algeria. The country of two million inhabitants had until then only had diplomatic representation in the region in Morocco and Malta.

A diplomatic representation of Slovenia, a member of the Schengen area, will open in Algeria, the head of the Slovenian diplomacy Tanjia Fajon confirmed on June 6 during an interview with her Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf.

The decision aims “to strengthen political rapprochement between the two countries and to explore promising prospects for economic partnership between them”, according to the press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The date of the installation of the Slovenian diplomatic mission has not been specified.

For the first time, the opening of the Slovenian embassy was mentioned in November 2022, during a meeting between the Slovenian minister and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Currently, the nearest Slovenian diplomatic representations for Algerians are the general consulates in Casablanca (Morocco), Seville (Spain) and Valletta (Malta).

The Schengen area is an area of ​​free movement of people, where there are no internal border controls. This area includes the territories of 27 European States, 23 of which are members of the European Union.
