For the third consecutive year, the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, has decided to postpone the organization of the Throne Day, scheduled for July 30 each year. The Royal Palace justified this choice by the health situation in the country. This could be quite different because already in 2019, the sovereign had made a decision in view of a given situation.

The Moroccan Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery announced, this Friday, July 22, 2022, “that in view of the continuation of the preventive measures imposed by the evolution of the health situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic 19, it was decided to postpone all the activities, festivities and ceremonies planned for the 23ᵉ Anniversary of the accession of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, to the Throne of His Glorious Ancestors”.

The reception ceremony presided over by the King, the swearing-in of the award-winning officers of the various military, paramilitary and civilian schools and institutes, the ceremony of allegiance to the King, the torchlight procession organized by the Royal Guard, as well as all the parades and events are cancelled. A decision which is not new and could hardly be attributed to the health situation alone in the country where all the meetings are held. If it’s not the Marrakech of laughter, it’s the CAF Awards.

You have to go back to August 2019 to get an idea of the reason for this repeated decision by the king to postpone any party he presided over with his ex-wife Lalla Salma. At the time, King Mohammed VI, then in the midst of the controversy linked to his separation from Princess Lalla Salma, had already decided: “from this year 2019 and for the years to come, King Mohammed VI will no longer celebrate the festivities marking his birthday scheduled for August 21. A statement from the Royal Palace that said a lot. Since that date, the king has not celebrated anything in public: Throne Day as a birthday.
