The Algerian journalist and the translator, Saïd Chitour, has been placed under the arrest warrant, over an alleged “espionage case, handing over classified documents to foreign diplomats for money”, the Algerian daily newspaper El Watan reported, on Wednesday.

Saïd Chitour has been arrested on June 5th, at the airport of Algiers, returning from Spain. He has been submitted to the Dar el-Beida court in Algiers, two weeks ago, and placed under warrant of committal and jailing in El-Harrach Prison (Algiers).

“I saw him in prison just a week ago. He was lost, absent and completely melted. He kept repeating that he was innocent and that they have no evidence to support the charges. He knew he was being watched, but he never spoke of his worries. He was arrested twice for questioning. He said he had enemies, but no more. Upon arriving at the airport, he has just had time to call his wife to tell her that he has been arrested and then nothing,” Chitour’s brother told El Watan.
