Algeria: Staple food retail price up in December 2016

ALGIERS- Retail price trend for most of staple food went up significantly in December 2016, compared with the same month in 2015, the Ministry of Trade told APS.

“Significant increases were recorded in the retail prices of some products, mainly infant milk (+9.8%), dry yeast (+8.9%), pasta (+8%), tomato concentrate (+6.7%), coffee (+6.7%), packaged flour (+6.3%), tea (+6.1%), rice (+5.7%), white sugar (+3.5%), cooking oils (+1%) semolina (+0.3%).

In pulses, the most significant hike was recorded in the prices of chickpeas (+63%), dried bean (+6.6%) and lentils (+5.3%).

In fresh vegetables, except for the price of onions which dropped sharply (-37%), those of other products rocketed in December 2016 compared with the same month in 2015, especially imported garlic (+30.2%), fresh tomatoes (+18.5%), potatoes (+2%) local garlic (+1.2%).

On the other hand, the average prices of local meats declined by 1.5% for mutton and -4.2% for chicken meat, while the price of eggs rose by 36.4% in December 2016 compared with the same period a year earlier.
