The Popular Party (PP) of Melilla assured that the maintenance, by Morocco, of the measure of closing its land and sea borders with Ceuta and Melilla, beyond its health character (fight against Covid-19) advanced about two years ago, hides “a diplomatic and political problem” between Spain and the kingdom.

In a press statement, the PP MP in the Assembly, Fadela Mohatar, recalled that Morocco had already unilaterally closed its customs post in Melilla on August 1, 2018, before closing a year and a half later, in March 2020, its borders with the autonomous city due to the health crisis, reports Europa Press.

“The border closure is motivated in the background by diplomatic and political issues. This situation affects hard all the citizens of Melilla who are worried about the duration of the measure and not knowing when it will end ”, she indicated.

The PP parliamentarian, aware of “the socio-economic impact that this has had on both sides of the border”, believes that “it would not be logical to reopen the borders in the current circumstances”. Rather, it offers “flexibility to allow inhabitants of border areas to move freely, but under no circumstances, as was the case before the borders were closed, without any filter or control”.
