Enagás reported that in January, Algeria supplied a quarter of Spain’s monthly natural gas demand, Spanish press reported.

Algeria regained its place as Spain’s main natural gas supplier in January, supplying a quarter of monthly demand, gas network operator Enagás said on Thursday.

Enagás said 25%, or 8,545 GWh, of total gas deliveries to Spain in January this year came from Algeria. The two countries are connected by the 757-kilometer Medgaz undersea gas pipeline.

The United States and Nigeria followed on the list of major suppliers to Spain with 20.7% and 20.2% respectively, with all volumes shipped as liquefied natural gas.

Deliveries from Russia tripled year-on-year to 6,372 gigawatt hours (GWh) from 2,178 GWh. This is the highest volume since June, when Spain supplied Russia with 8,752 GWh.

The old Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline was closed in the fourth quarter of 2021 after clashes between Algiers and Rabat, while diplomatic tensions with Madrid escalated when the Spanish government changed its position on Western Sahara, leading Algeria’s Sonatrach to review gas prices.

Sonatrach and the Spanish energy group Naturgy have established a new tariff applicable retroactively to volumes delivered until the end of 2022 and have also agreed to continue negotiating tariffs this year.
