According to the source, Parliament Speaker Mouad Bouchareb will temporarily replace Abbes until the party decides who will succeed him.

Ould Abbes took office in October 2016; replacing former Secretary-General Amaar Saadani who also abruptly resigned.

According to party sources, who spoke to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency on the condition of anonymity, Bouchareb will head the party for a transitional period of 45 days until the party holds an extraordinary conference to elect a new chief.

The same sources said Ould Abbes came to office as usual before suffering a severe heart attack and was taken to the Ain Al-Nuja military hospital in the capital for treatment.
