Russia has refuted information circulating in European and American reports about the presence of Wagner forces in Libya and several neighboring countries.

The Russian embassy in Libya has denied reports circulating about the presence of Wagner mercenaries in Libya and Tunisia.

In a press release published this Monday, May 20, 2024, the embassy indicates that Western countries are spreading false information through their media with the aim of sowing fear and trying to influence public opinion.

Russians have called the report published by American and European media about the “Wagner” company false and unfounded.

The embassy also categorically denied what it called allegations by the Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” regarding the presence of Russian fighter jets at the airport on the island of  Djerba in Tunisia, saying the allegations were baseless and were part of the political directives followed by Western media to tarnish the image of Russia.

In its edition of Sunday, May 19, 2024, La Repubblica reports that Russian military flights landing in  Djerba are causing concern.

Quoted by La Repubblica from New York, a spokesperson for the US State Department even expresses this concern: “We remain concerned about the activities of the Wagner group and those supported by Russia on the African continent, which fuel conflicts and encourage irregular immigration, including to Tunisia.
